LOUIS POULSEN | PH 5 | Design: Poul Henningsen | 10 colour options |
Poul Henningsen's lifelong collaboration with Louis Poulsen began in 1925 and the Danish deign genius’s pioneering work concerning the relationship between light structures, shadows, glare and colour reproduction when compared to man’s need for light still forms the basis for the theories practiced by the brand to this very day.
Henningsen developed the PH 5 in 1958 in response to constant changes to the shape and size of incandescent bulbs by bulb manufacturers. It is so christened due to the due to the 50cm diameter of the main shade and, irrespective of how the light is installed or the light source used, it remains completely glare-free. Small red and blue shades are inserted to supplement the colour in the part of the spectrum where the eye is least sensitive.
The iconic PH 5 design has been regularly updated as light sources have developed through the years but it remains an absolute classic – suitable for high and low mounting, repetitive installations and providing great architectural versatility for the home or office.
